StarMetro Transitions to New, State-of-the-Art Electronic Fare System
September 24, 2020
This weekend, StarMetro, the City of the Tallahassee's public transportation department, will begin transitioning to a new, state-of-the-art electronic fare collection system, which will streamline and enhance payment options for riders.
The move toward a new, state-of-the-art fare collection system was approved by the Tallahassee City Commission in January and aligns with the City's 2024 Strategic Plan to ensure that "public transportation is accessible, efficient and equitable."
Installation of the new fareboxes is the first step in a larger fare system upgrade, which will allow StarMetro passengers more flexibility and options. The new, state-of-the-art fare collection system will improve the overall travel experience for customers by reducing point of sale purchase time upon boarding the bus and by integrating cashless payment options.
As this work is being conducted, there will be no interruption in service, and StarMetro will offer fare free rides on its regular, fixed route and Dial-A-Ride services this Saturday through Monday, Sept. 26-28.
Later this fall, when all upgraded systems are in place, the new farebox will be able to accept rechargeable smart cards, magnetic stripe cards, barcodes for mobile tickets purchased through apps and cash.
StarMetro also plans to deploy a new ticket vending machine in C.K. Steele Plaza, allowing customers to purchase and reload smart cards and buy same day tickets.
