City Sets Foundation for Construction Careers
New Career Development Program Fills Trade Training Gap
June 27, 2019
The barriers to exiting poverty can seem insurmountable, which is why the City of Tallahassee has developed a variety of programs to help residents build applicable skills and knowledge that can lead to stable careers. The newest program – Build Up Tallahassee – is an accelerated career development program that will provide 12 weeks of instruction and hands-on learning in a variety of skills related to the construction industry.
“The City of Tallahassee is committed to be a leader in local economic development efforts,” Mayor John Dailey said. “Using our resources in innovative ways, such as the Build Up Tallahassee career development program, we are actively working to address demands for a skilled workforce while also stemming the cycle of poverty.”
Build Up Tallahassee will begin the week of July 15 with an inaugural class of 12 participants. In stark contrast to traditional continuing education, participants, which include members of TEMPO (Tallahassee Engaged in Meaningful Productivity for Opportunity), will work with crews on various City construction and maintenance projects while in the program, allowing them to earn while they learn.
Each participant will receive instruction on excavation, trenching and shoring; maintenance of traffic; line locates and reading construction plans; equipment loading and unloading; environmental stewardship and emergency preparedness; and instruction on Commercial Driver License (CDL) general knowledge, pre-trip vehicle inspection and driving commercial equipment. Upon completion of the program, participants will be ready to test for their CDL licenses.
Participants will leave the program with career-ready skills that will immediately be used. The City of Tallahassee has committed to helping ensure that Build Up Tallahassee participants successfully obtain employment. This will establish a solid foundation for a stable and rewarding career. Learn more at Talgov.com.
