Free Community Workshops for Fair Housing Month
City supports Fair Housing Month activities
April 04, 2019
April is National Fair Housing Month. In recognition of the U.S. Fair Housing Act, which was passed 51 years ago, the City of Tallahassee, in partnership with the Big Bend and Economic Development United Housing Partnership, will host a series of events this month.
A youth empowerment financial workshop will be held on Friday, April 5, from 6-8 p.m. at Bethel AME Church, located at 501 W. Orange Ave. This workshop is designed to provide youth with financial literacy tools, such as valuing credit, investing and saving.
On Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Bethel AME Church, residents are invited to participate in a Fair and Affordable Housing Symposium and Expo. The symposium will feature workshops on topics such as qualifying for homeownership, credit repair and fair and affordable housing. Organizations such as Tallahassee Lender's Consortium and Habitat for Humanity will be onsite as part of the Expo and will share valuable information about the services they offer. Lunch will be provided.
The U.S. Fair Housing Act, signed into law on April 11, 1968, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, sex and, as amended, disability or family status. Every April, people across the country are encouraged to learn more about their rights and responsibilities under the Act as part of National Fair Housing Month.
You can RSVP for both events by calling Bethel AME Church at 850-576-7501. To learn more visit, Talgov.com.
