Is Your Neighborhood Hurricane Ready?
City Offers Preparedness Workshops and Resources
April 02, 2019
Severe weather, including hurricanes and tornadoes, can cause widespread damage to a community and its neighborhoods. Even though response crews are prepared, they need you and your neighbors to also be prepared to ensure Tallahassee is a truly resilient city - one that can survive and quickly recover from any disaster.
Ahead of the 2019 hurricane season, which begins on June 1, the City of Tallahassee will offer a series of workshops to help residents and neighborhoods prepare. The Neighborhood PREP (Plan for Readiness and Emergency Preparedness) Workshops will be held:
- April 9 at Seminole Baptist Church, 3330 Mission Road
- April 29 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 4784 Thomasville Road
- May 9 at Sue Herndon McCollum Community Center, 501 Ingleside Drive
- May 21 at Jack McLean Community Center, 700 Paul Russell Road
- May 23 at Jake Gaither Community Center, 801 Bragg Drive
Each workshop will take place from 6-8 p.m. Residents and neighborhood leaders interested in attending should register here. Those individuals who register will be eligible for a chance to win a bucket full of preparedness items and materials.
At the workshop, participants will receive resources, which are also available at Talgov.com/PREP. These resources will feature helpful information that residents and neighborhood leaders can use to organize before and after a storm. Additionally, participants will leave the workshop with a better understanding of the tools and items needed and/or available within the community. Attendees will also participate in storm related activities to illustrate the importance of preparing before a disaster strikes.
As the community experienced with Hurricane Michael, personal preparedness can enhance safety and ease the recovery process. From learning what supplies you need to have to updating utility contact information, resources are available at Talgov.com/Emergency to help residents plan for and understand how to respond best for their unique situation.
