Proactive Patrols to Improve Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Continue
February 17, 2021
The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) is committed to ensuring the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists through education and visibility. TPD is continuing to conduct proactive patrols with the goal of reducing the number of crashes through High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) details. These details will continue through May 2021 in pre-determined areas that have been identified by the Department Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Department of Transportation as having a high number of traffic crashes.
Enforcement efforts will continue to focus primarily on educating drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. Violations, however, may result in warnings or citations depending on the circumstances.
Every crash, every injury, every fatality not only affects those involved, it also affects families, friends and the community. Below are tips that each of us can use to protect one another:
Drivers, obey speed limits, never drive impaired and always watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. When approaching a red light or stop sign, you must stop prior to the marked stop bar and crosswalk.
Bicyclists, obey traffic laws, ride in the direction of traffic and use lights when riding at night.
Pedestrians, cross in crosswalks or at intersections, obey pedestrian signals and make sure you are visible to drivers when walking at night.
Traffic laws can be found online at the Online Sunshine website. Florida Statute Chapter 316 covers many laws governing drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.
