TFD Responds to Three Fully Involved Fires Over the Weekend

The Tallahassee Fire Department responded to three fully involved fires over the weekend. It started with a residential fire on Jake Drive at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9. Units from TFD stations 1 and 3 responded. Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke and fire showing. The occupants escaped unharmed, but two pets were unable to be rescued.
Later that evening at 8:54 p.m., units from TFD stations 1, 3 and 4 responded to a commercial building fire on Springhill Road. Upon arrival, crews found two intermodal Conex containers, tires and a van on fire. Crews battled the blaze and protected nearby exposures.
The following morning, Sunday, Jan. 10, units from TFD stations 1 and 2 responded to a second residential fire on Alliegood Court. Upon arrival, the home was heavily involved with fire that had transferred from the fireplace to the attic.
The Tallahassee Police Department, Leon County EMS and City of Tallahassee Utilities assisted on all three fires.
The Red Cross was called to assist the residents of both residential fires, as both families were displaced.
The fires on Jake Drive and Springhill Road are under investigation at this time. The fire on Alliegood Court is believed to have started in the fireplace.
The Tallahassee Fire Department reminds residents to take fire safety precautions during cold weather and offers these fireplace safety tips:
- Always use a fireplace safety screen.
- Keep flammable objects (i.e., rugs, curtains, etc.) away from the fireplace.
- Do not leave children unattended around the fireplace. Remember that the fireplace and its surroundings stay hot; this includes the safety screen.
- Have your fireplace inspected and swept yearly by a certified fireplace technician.
