City Receives National Recognition for Natural Gas Utility
July 22, 2020
This week, the American Public Gas Association (APGA) presented the City of Tallahassee with the prestigious System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) Award, recognizing the City's Natural Gas Utility for excellence in operations.
Competing with more than 750 public gas systems across the nation, the City's Natural Gas Utility earned the esteemed Gold Level SOAR Award, the highest designation that can be achieved by a public utility. This marks the third time that the City has received the Gold Level SOAR Award since the implementation of the program in 2014. The SOAR Award recognizes system integrity, system improvement, employee safety and workforce development.
"This prestigious designation is an example of the City's commitment to being the national leader in the delivery of public service," Mayor John Dailey said. "To date, the City of Tallahassee is the only public utility to receive APGA's Gold Level SOAR Award three times in a row, which is a testament to the many dedicated City employees who work tirelessly serving this community."
"We are extremely proud to be recognized for our commitment to quality service, safety and operational excellence by our peers from APGA," Stephen Mayfield, Assistant General Manager of Natural Gas Operations, said. "This recognition affirms the City of Tallahassee's commitment to be the best public utility in the nation and delivering natural gas to customers in the most safe and efficient manner."
Last year, APGA recognized the City's Natural Gas Utility for its continual excellence with its 2019 Public Gas System Achievement Award.
"The City of Tallahassee's Natural Gas Utility consistently demonstrates a commitment to providing natural gas safely and efficiently to those in the community and, as such, serves as a model for all other natural gas utilities in the country," APGA President and CEO Dave Schryver said.
The City's Natural Gas Utility provides clean, safe, economical and reliable natural gas to residents and businesses in Leon, Gadsden and Wakulla counties. The system is comprised of 920 miles of underground gas mains, which serve over 33,000 customers.
